Connect Codex to your DirectAdmin account

How to connect ChatGPT/Codex to your hosting account, so codex works in the terminal and you can pick Codex in the Invoker Assistant.

Use Codex for this conversation

Type this in the Invoker Assistant and you continue working with Codex instead of Claude. For that, Codex needs to be connected to your hosting account first. You do that once, in Invoker Link.

What do you need?

  • A hosting account with SSH access. That's included in every plan.
  • Your own ChatGPT subscription with Codex.
  • Five minutes.

You don't need a Claude subscription for this. Codex and Claude Code work independently of each other: you can connect both, only Codex, or only Claude Code, whatever fits you.

Invoker Link is the settings area in DirectAdmin. It has four tabs: Overview, Claude, Codex and GitHub. On the Codex tab you connect your own ChatGPT subscription, separately from any Claude connection.

Connecting Codex in four steps

  1. Open Invoker Link in DirectAdmin and go to the Codex tab.
  2. Click Connect Codex. A tab opens to sign in with OpenAI.
  3. Sign in with your own ChatGPT account and confirm you want to connect Codex.
  4. You'll see a code. Paste it back into DirectAdmin and click Connect.

After a few seconds it says connected, along with the account you're using.

Picking Codex in the Invoker Assistant

Once Codex is connected, you pick it per conversation in the Invoker Assistant, along with a model:

  • GPT-5.5,
  • GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra or Luna,
  • GPT-6-Astra.

You simply switch models in a new conversation. Older conversations stay with the model they started with.

In the terminal and over SSH too

Open the terminal in DirectAdmin, or log in over SSH, and type:

codex

Codex starts logged in with your own subscription straight away. You don't need to sign in anywhere separately.

Where is Codex allowed to work?

Codex works in a sandbox with write access to your own files (workspace-write), never outside it. What that means exactly depends on your hosting:

  • On shared hosting, Codex works inside your own account, in the jail. It sticks to your plan's limits, like the rest of your account.
  • On a Claude Server, Codex works with admin rights, like the rest of the assistant does there.

What happens behind the scenes?

The server logs Codex in as your own user, with a session in your own home folder. That session is only readable by your account. Your ChatGPT password never touches the server, since you sign in with OpenAI itself and only confirm a code.

One thing to keep in mind: websites on your account run as the same user as Codex. If you suspect a site has been hacked, disconnect Codex and get in touch with us.

What does it cost?

For Codex itself you pay OpenAI, through your existing ChatGPT subscription. Invoker charges nothing extra on top of your hosting plan: that plan costs the same, whether you connect Claude, Codex, both, or neither.

Common mistakes

You sign in with ChatGPT, but the code doesn't make it back into DirectAdmin. Copy the whole code, including any characters after a # or -. A partial code doesn't match your login attempt and gets rejected.

You pick Codex in the Invoker Assistant, but nothing happens. Codex probably isn't connected yet. Go to the Codex tab in Invoker Link and follow the four steps above.

You think you're paying twice. You're not. You pay OpenAI for your ChatGPT/Codex subscription, separately from your hosting invoice. Your hosting plan costs the same, with or without Codex.

How do you disconnect Codex?

Go to the Codex tab in Invoker Link and click Disconnect. Codex is then logged out of your hosting account. Your ChatGPT subscription itself simply stays active.

No hosting with Codex built in yet? The plans and what Codex can do on your account are at Codex in your hosting.
